Creating opportunities
A king was on the last leg of selecting a Prime minister for his country and had identified Nanda among many aspirants. Nanda had got through in all the selection process and had proved himself to be an able warrior, adept at administration, and comfortable in building healthy human relationships. However, the king decided to check his skills in handling impossible situations before announcing his name for the post of prime minister.
He threw a challenge to Nanda who gracefully accepted the challenge ….What was the challenge?
The challenge was to collect 1000 arrows for the army……….simple isn’t it ? Yes if there was no conditions ………but there were three conditions attached to the task.
- Nanda should not make the arrows himself.
- he needs to collect the arrows overnight and
- he had to complete the task from an island which had no human habitation.
The date was fixed and Nanda was taken to the island early in the evening and left alone on its shore. The island had no resource to survive and was inhabited by many dangerous animals. As Nanda explored the island in the dark he saw a few broken boats, dry leaves and open land with hard stones.
An idea struck him……..
In the middle of the night he filled the broken boats with dry leaves and set them on fire. As the leaves in the boats caught fire, he pushed the boats against a nearby island of the neighbouring country. The Army of the neighbouring county got alarmed when they saw a blazing fire moving towards their land. They started shooting arrows as they thought that there the fire was an attack from an enemy.
These arrows fell on the boats. After sufficient time Nanda pulled back the boats and you know what? There were more than 1000 arrows, which he not made, had them ready overnight even though he was in a no man’s land. All conditions had been fulfilled.
He was appointed as the prime minister of the country.
